Sarah Cavis
Early Schooling
I grew up in Lake Orion, Michigan which is approximately 45 minutes northwest of Detroit, Michigan. I attended the Lake Orion Community Schools. I was involved in may activities including soccer, swim team, musicals, and the band. I always loved reading and writing.
College
I attended Western Michigan University and got my Bachelor in Music Education emphasis in Instrumental Music. in April 2009. I was involved in the Bronco Marching Band and Sigma Alpha Iota Women's Music Fraternity.
Post College
I have been teaching music for the last three years. I have worked with students from Kindergarten through 12th Grade in a variety of music settings. I have made a priority of using texts and writing as a part of the curriculum in these classes. I returned to Western Michigan University in July 2010 to work on a Graduate Certificate in Secondary English Education.
What does writing mean to me?
Writing to me is a way to express myself. I have never been a very confident person when I speak, so writing is a great outlet for me to express myself. I am given the time to think about what I really want to say and find a way to express my feelings in exactly the way I want. Writing is a therapeutic escape for me.
Writing and reading in my family
My mother was always the one in my family that was good at reading and writing. She always read to me and worked with me on my writing homework, all the way through my schooling.
My dad was NOT a writer. If I had a math question, he was the one to go to. However, he had terrible spelling and never read. I remember looking at his typed camping list and seeing "bowel scrappers" instead of "bowl scrapers", "pictures of water" instead of "pitchers of water". We still pick on him for this.
My older brother was much like my dad and never was very interested in English. I clearly remember being in 7th and 8th grade and having him ask me to proofread his Junior and Senior
